A HOLIDAY GOOD DEED GOES FAR

The world goes round on one axis, each day, hour after hour. We pivot with the rush of the world, with the hustle and bustle of a busy life. But, think of those people who can't be a part of the flurry and excitement of doing everyday things. Sometimes we think we have it "bad", but just stop for one day and look around you while you are shopping. You might see someone in a wheelchair trying to reach a grocery item on the top shelf....you could help! Or you might see someone wearing a cloth turban cap with tufts of hair showing at the bottom.....we all know that person most likely went through chemotherapy and lost their hair, maybe they need help somehow. Or look for the elderly man guiding his wife by the arm, and both are suffering from Parkinson's Disease, or bent over with scoliosis or perhaps rheumatoid arthritis.

Some people can't walk down the street because they are crippled or are blind. Or maybe the elderly person who is confined in a nursing home would love a little love from someone who cares..

I will tell you a story about a little lady who captured my heart. This lady is called Norma and is a resident where my dear sister Patty resides. Norma has a husband, but they don't get along. The reason she is in the nursing home is because she fell down the basement stairs as she was carrying a huge laundry basket which her husband refused to carry for her. Norma is 86 years young. She cries a lot because her husband doesn't want her to get better and come home and he has only visited once in 7 months and not even on the day of their wedding anniversary of 65 years. But she is recovering. So each day I see my sister, I take my sister down to Norma's room and visit. I read to both of them. And I take Norma a 50 cent Dove milk chocolate candy bar....oh she loves them. When I leave the nursing home, the other elderly people who are using the grab bar to get from one end to the other end, get a push from me....all the way to the end. And a happy "hello" and "how are you" too. I also send cards to some of the residents....just to say hello because many never see a relative or have a visitor.

A good deed never goes unnoticed. When you see those elderly people this winter, ask them if they need help pushing their cart in the icy parking lot, or help them unload their groceries. You might get a few no thanks but think about the cases where you really can help.

Maybe your life could be enriched by putting an ad in the local paper and offering to go do grocery shopping for shut-ins. Or to take a person to a local doctor appointment if they are mobile. If you feel you need to charge a fee, do it....a small sum to cover your time is certainly ok.

Or, how about visiting a local nursing home and looking up a couple of resident's names on the directory. Most homes have these directories with the patient's room number on the directory. Find out the nursing home's address and send a christmas card and address it with just your first name and a note that you are a caring person. Or volunteer to help with the holiday parties which happen at nursing homes or for the kids in the cancer units of the hospitals.

Or, donate two cans of food per week to your local food pantry/food bank. You won't miss those cans from your pantry shelf. During the holidays, the food pantries typically have 3 to 4 times more people asking for help than is usual at other times. Better yet, if you live in a half-way small city, try to contact the food pantry and ask if you can help organize a food drive for them, ask the local post office , library, school (put a box in the lobby. Or even the heart or pulmonary units of the local hospitals. A great way is to have the younger school grades compete to see which grade can bring in the most, with each class member receiving a small prize or just the one person who brings the most .... see if McDonald's would give you coupons for a free coke or apple pie to hand out to the one who brings the most.

Let's do some good deeds. We are the brilliant women of the garden and wow. Caring souls we definitely are.

Use this blog to list your good deeds for the week. We'll start this and go till the end of the year....or we can later extend it. Your choice. Help me be a better person and work off some of our now free time. Our energy will help mankind and we will be rewarded by the big man up above!
